Have you ever had the experience of being triggered by something and you had no earthly idea why? By triggered I mean you are having a completely benign conversation with someone and they happen to say something and then all of a sudden BAM you feel your throat tighten or you face flush. You wonder to yourself “what the hell is that about?” Then you remember a situation in your past where someone said the exact same word and during that interaction you felt dismissed or invalidated. Now your body is reacting to that same thing as if it is happening in the present moment. Wow the body really does remember! You may be saying to yourself, “So what do we do now and why is this even important?” Well I am glad you asked. I am learning that when this happens in my own life I need to apply a double dose of curiosity in the moment. To take the signals my body is giving me, whether physical, mentally or emotionally as kind of a spotlight on the areas where things have gotten “stuck” in my body. When I can become aware of them I can begin whatever process is needed to loosen them up and allow them to flow through me instead of taking up residence. In order to do this I have to make friends with my body, tune my awareness to its voice, and then move and make decisions based on what it is has to say. Believe it or not, the body is super smart and it can be trusted. It knows. It remembers. It is justing waiting for us to listen.
